Chikungunya, a Global Threat Currently Circulating in Latin America

چکیده
Chikungunya fever (CHIK) is a highly important arbovirosis currently established in Lat‐ in America and the Caribbean (LAC); its acute and chronic burden is an overlooked issue for policy makers. Disease spread control and proper management of chronic-derived se‐ quelae do not seem like a realistic goal in shortand mid-term. The CHIKV circulating in the Western Hemisphere is closely related to strains from Philippines, China, and Yap (Federated States of Micronesia), and vertical and horizontal transmission of infection has been reported. Pathogenesis is still not well understood, and vaccines are under develop‐ ment yet. Here, we provide a summary of information regarding LAC spread of the dis‐ ease from a public health, clinical and molecular perspective, particularly from the experience in Colombia.

Letter to the Editor: Chikungunya Virus Infection—An Update on Chronic Rheumatism in Latin America
The article of Krutikov and Manson1 was interesting. However, no comment was made on the impact and related clinical epidemiology of the chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection during the 2014–2015 epidemics in Latin America, the most recent area affected by CHIKV. Certainly, persistent musculoskeletal manifestations of the disease have been shown to affect a highly variable proportion of infected ...

The pandemic of Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) infection throughout South and Central America is the most important epidemiological occurrence nowadays. High temperatures rates, vector abundance, and inability to control it makes Latin America a high-risk area for the establishment and spread of arbovirus diseases and, as a consequence, their neurological complications. This ar...

The role of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) in the spread of many arboviral infections including dengue and chikungunya is now well-documented1–3. Aedes albopictus currently shows a global presence and recognized as a major threat to human health. In India, re-emergence of chikungunya has been reported from several states since 20054. Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) plays a key role in the transmission in va...
متن کاملDengue: Global Threat.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease, which is currently an expanding global problem. Four closely related dengue serotypes cause the disease, which ranges from asymptomatic infection to undifferentiated fever, dengue fever (DF), and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). DHF is characterized by fever, bleeding diathesis, and a tendency to develop a potentially fatal shock syndrome. Dengue infecti...
